Language is the most direct way for mankind to communicate information and exchange ideas, and it serves as a bridge between different people and cultures. Chinese is not only the official language of our country but is also a language with one of the longest histories in the world. Chinese language study is becoming increasingly popular in the world. Due to the fact that the Asia-Pacific region is becoming ever more prosperous and influential on the world stage as well as the fact that a quarter of the world's population speak Chinese, there has been an explosion of interest in learning Chinese. In recent years, Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language (TCS/FL) has been growing up rapidly. In response to increasing interest in Chinese language and culture throughout the world, National Kaohsiung Normal University established the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in 2003 as the first graduate institute of TCS/FL in southern Taiwan.
